Friendly Fires

I was meant to post that a few weeks before my leave but didn’t get round it as I was listening to some 90s crap instead, you know like Gina G – “Ooh Ahh Just A Little Bit” one of the UK Eurovision contestants back in the days. But as I have bags of time because I’m getting paid to sleep I thought it was the right time to bring the Friendly Fires to your attention. And because I know Crew a fond of music, this will interest you to the highest point. It’s not about Mariah, not about Leona, no. I’m talking actual music.

Those guys will make it big before New Years Eve. Friendly Fires met at school in St Albans. Aged 14 they formed their first band, a post-hardcore outfit which existed until they began university. During this time lead singer Ed Macfarlane released his own music (under his own name) through the electronica label Skam, and Precinct Recordings. Upon leaving university they formed a new band inspired by dance music, “lush shoegaze melodies, and classic pop songwriting. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of the Section 25 LP Always Now. The band consider German techno label Kompakt, Carl Craig and Prince to be their greatest influences. Check out the original “Paris” video :

Dance with indie credibility. None-existent a few years ago, now there’s LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, CSS… even Bloc Party are lording it up on synths and beats. Add to the growing bunch Friendly Fires, who, like fellow alliteration kids Crystal Castles make disco pop beats for the asymmetric crowd. ‘Paris’ should see many an indie disco get yet more sweat covered, as frenetic melodies break up to a chorus which sounds so much like Kele Okereke it might as well be a guest spot. But Friendly Fires got there first. Plus, they’re better.

But There’s more. A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a delicious remix of this already sizzling song. Performed by Aeroplane and featuring Au Revoir Simone on the vocals. I can already picture the dribbles of awww as I play that track loud enough to scare Kalil out of the flat… Go download as it is here for free. And be sure to play this thing loud… You’ll thank me when your friends say “where did you get this ??? I want it !”

In other news, I have been through another Standby Shift from 4am to 12pm yesterday. And guess what !? I haven’t been pulled out! I’m starting to feel a little crazy on one side. I want to fly out of here but they won’t let meeeee. So I’m stuck in the sandpit. And as generous as they are. They’ve extended my reserve until the 14th of November because I took 13 days leave in October ! Thus scrapping my long awaited bids for a Glasgow on the 7th and my Singapore – Brisbane hope. Instead they gave me a Glasgow on the 17th (not much use really !) followed by a Manila and a Shanghai. November is definately the worst month in the calendar for Airboy.
