Why can’t we have the same passengers on each and every flight of our network ? Why can’t people just be like them ? This would transform the world in a whole new place already. People would discover that travelling with other people can lead to new friendly relationships. Instead of narrowing their thoughts between a pair of armrests and a LCD screen ! This will never happen. Our passengers today were the kindest I’ve seen in my nine months with Emirates. It makes our job certainly easier, but also much more enjoyable. It seemed to be so easy for them… Calmly boarding, no huffing and puffing, just so gentle with themselves and others around them. Those were true gold passengers. Smiling and actually enjoying their little ride over the Black Sea and over the French/Italian Alps. A far cry, actually a zillion years away from what a LHR or a JFK can even pretend to be. There’s no comparison what so ever. On LHRs & JFKs people could sincerely fight over 2 inches of armrest, an annoying reclined chair or their flatulent neighbour. What is wrong with these destinations ?? I’m still trying to figure that one out.
Anyway, you’ve kind of guessed that my flight over to Zurich was probably the nicest I’ve experienced thanks mainly to the passengers and the short flying time. After a packed-Chennai-red-eye-turnaround-with little rest, it could only improve anyway. I was looking forward to that trip. And Switzerland lived up to my expectations. Lovely tiny country about as big as two Emirates put together, with no army nor air force, just a bunch of happy people enjoying themselves with the money of others squeezed between the rest of Europe’s cynical countries (I’m thinking Italy, France, Germany, Spain… and so on). A little country with great food, CHOCOLATE, and SNOW !
We deplaned the pressurized tube to a welcoming -3 degrees Celsius. Ah. My nose nearly fell there. As much as I could cover up and still remain in the grooming standard limits… I had to bring my collar up, resulting in looking like Mao (Weird in a country like Switzerland). We got to the hotel which is in spitting distance from the airport and by the time we got our rooms, we were all shivering like sheared sheep out on Snowdonia (A place in North Wales where the sun only appears on the 4th of July…… for Independance Day…).
Changed pronto and met with the Purser and the FG1 clique for some grocery shopping (where I took the picture of all the pork products… below). I got some fresh bread, saucisson, mayo and salad to make myself a sandwich once I got back to the room. Loved it so much I ate the whole pack of meat and bread. Was ready to venture more out in the wilderness and decided to go behind the hotel to see what they had for me. I was surprised to see a jogging track in open fields, topped with white snow… and a bird feeder here and there. Very pittoresque. Authentic. Took a few pictures until I realised I was really not geared very well for that kind of weather and decided to head to downtown Zurich in search of a cheap scarf and gloves.
Took the Shuttle to the airport, then managed – without any assistance or directions – to get a return ticket to Zurich BH which is the central station in the heart of the city. If I did it, anyone can. It took 20 minutes from hotel to the closest H&M I could find to sort myself out with winter gear. I got a nice grey scarf but didn’t find any gloves. I scrapped that idea and braved the cold wind for the rest of my treck.
Had the crazy idea to have some chocolate in switzerland, and of course, there’s no better place for it ! With the like’s of Sprungli and Lindt in the vicinity, I could only dribble. As Melissa mentioned in one of the previous comments, I went for the “Truffle Du Jour” and thought it had a special taste. I should really be ashamed, coming from a Gastronomical empire like France, I should know better. But didn’t find it too pleasing. I pushed that to one side and got a dozen of reaaaaaaaally nice cubes with praline and other nouthwatering stuffings. I definately recommend stopping by, forgetting your gym sessions and get a few of those chocolates.
I then carried on deep into the old town. took a few pictures of what felt like being in a giant Doll House or even at Disneyland it was so clean and colorful. Loved it to bits. Reminded me of the Montmartre disrtict in Paris with those little winding pebbled streets and little alleyways. If you go to Zurich please to make the effort to see the city at night when the light is just magical. Especially in winter time. Every halo surrounding the lights are beautiful !
Walked even more and suddenly found my self back to where I started (H&M in fact). My legs were getting wobbly so I made the wise decision to come back to the hotel. Another 20 minutes later I was in the warmth of my gigantic bed.
I also took pictures of uber-cool looking expresso machines, toasters etc. The shop was called Sibler and had amazing stuff. Very design and plenty of rocking colors in there !

You were cold at -3°? I was working the other morning in Berlin and it was -21°. Try explaining a frozen water system to the passengers! First time poster, but love your Blog. Hopefully one day when I leave the big Orange I can get into EK!
It’s a shame you didn’t like the Truffle du Jour, I should have given you some money and you could have gotten me some, oh well
Most of the times the ladies give out a sample, esp. of the Luxembrugli. Can’t wait until my Zurich flight, that’s for sure…
BTW loving the toaster action…
seen the pictures and one of it made me miss Sprüngli
Truffes du Jour is absolutely the best!!
Don’t tell me you had those shoes on in the snow? You really weren’t prepared. -3 is actually warm to Canadian standards LOL. Makes me wonder what the Emirates crew do during their layover in Toronto with -16 to -22 degrees celcius!!
Zurich airport has got to be the most picturesque airport to take off from!
Looking forward to a brief report on your upcoming turnaround to KHI
.
Thanks for reminding me of that KHI Marco, now my days off will be much more appreciated !
Sorry didn’t mean to stress you in advance. It’s just a turnaround and it will be over in a blink of an eye!
