Where should I go for my holidays ??

tourists

It’s been a long time coming. I am eagerly waiting for some real time off. Time I can think about ME ME ME ! I have some ideas but it’s still a draft. And lacking some good destination ideas. Maybe you could help me sketch a nice getaway. My leave starts on the 1st of April and lasts for 7 days. I haven’t had the chance to go on a proper vacayCAY for the past 3 – 4 years as I’ve been working like a sick dog all this time. Although my new job (still considering my actual position as a “new job”) is like vacations all together if you forget the hard work we put in up there. But breathing farts, air/con and eating sand on a daily basis brings the need to reeeeeelax. I have thought of Mauritius for some lazing around while getting my skin it’s much needed UV fix. But to this point it looks like I’ll be the only one within my close friends to have leave at this time. So it will most probably be some lone holidays, going somewhere on my tod. And enjoy some quality time, reflecting on the busy past years.

I will avoid :

  • Rain
  • Europe
  • US of A
  • Anything over 8-9 hour (flight time) radius from DXB

I would really like :

  • No cooking at all
  • The Destination not being a city
  • Beach
  • Sun, nice weather
  • Not too expensive
  • Not a cheesy tourist trap either. It’s only fun when you’re with someone else !

If you have any ideas to come up with, please let me know. Would greatly appreciate any tips on locations, hotels, nice beaches. In fact anything that could help me choose a destination.

I just came back from Paris where the weather wasn’t as bad as I’d originally thought. Cold but not biting cold. Did my usual tour of places and finished at a friends birthday before heading back home at around midnight and sleeping straight till wake up call. Mum and Dad had prepared a REAL breakfast, complete with delicious fruitastic smoothies (wink wink GOT), fresh just-out-of-the-bread-oven Baguettes and nutella, pain au chocolat and a good laugh with BrotherOfSodwee on the phone whose in Broome at the moment, stuck in horrid torrential rain at night and scorching sunshine during the day. He should be heading north towards the end of the month after making some cash at a yet unknown venture of his (he lacks terrible communication skills this chap). He could swim in the sea but doesn’t want any kind of encounter with the sea crocs, the sharks or the deadly jelly fish. So he’s finding the pool at the backpackers’ backdiapers (somehow, and from what I hear, they’re all very young) hostel very soothing and a very good alternative to death.

I have a few days off in Dubz. I’ve already planned a mopping session, a laundry cycle and a trip to “A NIGHTCLUB WHOSE NAME WE CANNOT MENTION” on Monday. If anyone is in Dubai between Monday and Tuesday, you are most welcome to join me… Just your average lazy day off really !

In the meantime, I am still receiving alarming emails from wannabe cabin crew. I have been very slow in replying these past few days and apologize for the lack of commitment. I will try my best to answer all of your questions by tomorrow night.

That’s all folks, peace out !

  1. Lol, told you Broome was extreme!!

    Hrmmm, not sure of the flight time but I heard there’s some nice coastal places in India? Goa is it? Never been though so no idea if it’s any good.

    Mauritius sounds nice, or if you like to surf Reunion is meant to be good… but then you being French you’d probably know better than I! :p

  3. The only places I can think of that would fit in with your requirements are…

    - Bangkok, with a trip to Phuket
    - India, though goog luck getting on an ID90 competing with the rest of the company who have been there for 15+ years
    - Seychelles, thouh hotels can be expensive, I love this place to bits. Again may have problems with ID90s
    - Male, though from what I understand it can get a bit boring if you do not have a diving license
    - I know it’s Europe, but what about Greece? Aegina is a 1.5 hr boat ride from Athens, hotel rooms are about 60 Euro a night, and you can laze on the beach all day…
    - Sharm al Sheikh in Egypt?
    - Jordan, you can visit both Petra and the Dead Sea.

    Hope this helps!

  4. When I was sixteen I studied for one year in Ghana, as a foreign exchange student. I loved every second of it, and continue to think of Ghana on a daily basis. I think having a great host family had a lot to do with it. Anyways I know it probably isn’t high on the list, if on the list at all, but I think you would love. Ghana is known for some of the warmest, friendly, and most hospitable people in Africa. As a sixteen year old myself and other exchange students had no problems traveling the entire country by ourselves (Ghana is extremely safe.) I would recommend the Bradt travel guide, it accommodates any kind of budget, and is very informative. Anyway just wanted to put my two cents in, I know you probably won’t pick it but, it’s not Europe, America, and I don’t think it’s the rainy season right now. And the have beautiful beaches (especially in central, and western region) and it is defiantly not cheesy, or a tourist trap.
    Oh by the way I LOVED!!!!! your post on Amadou & Mariam, they are my favorite group, I’ve been listening to them for years I can’t wait for the day they come to Los Angeles.
    Thanks for your time,
    Bradley

  10. I’m rooting for Bali. It’s about 9+ hours from DXB, sounds pretty apt to your idea of a holiday as listed above.

    * The Destination not being a city
    * Beach
    * Sun, nice weather
    * Not too expensive
    * Not a cheesy tourist trap either. It’s only fun when you’re with someone else !

    Check check! :)

  11. although this will come short on your list of requirements, you can also consider Boracay. it’s an island 45mins away from manila. getting to manila on id90s these days are very easy. hotels and food are cheap and you have the beach to yourself the whole day.

  12. I’m thinking of Carolles Plage, it’s beach, it’s pancakes, shell fishing, it’s waterproof clothing shop, and halves of Konenbourg lager and it’s jellybeans….. look no further…tout comfort quoi !!!

  13. Goa is good, but remember Goa also has a side that is so different from the drugs, trance music and rave parties, which I have heard are now the norm. Being a former Portuguese colony, you will see the place full of Portuguese influences, especially the churches. (I have heritage from Goa, but have been there only once). If I were you I’d go to Mauritius or better still Reunion Island (And both speak French, so you will be quite at home, though not really there)

    (Regarding Reunion Island, I have no idea what Air Austral is thinking with starting a Reunion Island-Noumea-Sydney route..say what!!)

  15. Hi all!

    Uhm, Goa and Mauritius are quite “cheesy touristical”… although in April they can be a bit relaxed.

    i agree, if you really want a no-tourist trap, go to West-Africa!

  16. Interesting M, I was thinking the other day, I love Air Austral’s advertising for ‘first direct Sydney-Paris flight, via Reúnion. WTF?? That’s not a direct flight… hehehe

  17. Traytable, make that Sydney to Paris via Reunion (and a brief stop in Noumea). Would be better if they operated Reunion-Sydney-Noumea, then the Aussies would have one less stop to worry about :)
