• August 9, 2004 : A Solar Sail from the Rising Sun
  
  On Monday, August 9, 2004, 17h15 local time, the Japanese Space Agency JAXA succeeded in the test of a Solar Sail deployed in space, during a suborbital flight of the rocket S-310-34 lanched from the Space Centre of Uchinoura in Kagoshima. Two prototypes of sails were tested, 10 meters large, using reflecting films with 7.5 micrometers thickness.

• August 5, 2004 : Cosmos Qualified for Fligh
  
  In Ameria and Russia, the Cosmos 1 solar sail of the Planetary Society, is nearing completion. On August 5, after weeks of testing at the Space Research Institute (IKI) in Moscow, Cosmos succeeded its flight qualification. Comos will be launched on a Volna rocket from a Russian nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea, late this year or early next year, project director Lou Friedman said. Cosmos will be the first controlled solar sail in an orbital flight.
