Test deployment of a solar sail - ODISSEE Project

Based on promising results obtained during system studies by DLR (in cooperation with NASA/JPL) and ESA, a joint effort for the development and demonstration of the critical solar sail technologies on a co-funding basis was initiated in mid 1998 between DLR and ESA with INVENT GmbH as the industrial partner [3,4]. As a major project milestone of the joint DLR-ESA initiative, a ground test of a 20m x 20m solar sail structure was defined in order to demonstrate the feasibility of a fully deployable light-weight structure to the extent possible for ground demonstration in a 1g environment and at ambient environmental conditions.
